ITIL Training and Certification
by Ryan Corey - October 29, 2009
ITIL, or the Information Technology Infrastructure Library, is the cornerstone of standard practices within the IT field. If you're looking to become an IT specialist, whether on your own or with a company or institution, at least taking the ITIL Foundations training and certification is essential, especially in today's tough job market.

ITIL came about in the 1980s, in response to the increasingly wild and woolly world of unregulated, differing IT service management practices. Over thirty volumes laying out the best practices for the field were published; this standardization helped IT get where it is today: an integral part of any national or international business.

There has been a change in ITIL from what is known as v2 to v3, also known as the ITIL Bridge. A number of changes have come about, most importantly in the certification process itself. ITIL certification involves taking an examination with the ICMB (ITIL Certification Management Board). The certification structure used to be two-pronged - all applicants would take the Foundations certification, but an applicant would then go on to specialize as a Practitioner or a Manager, and take an additional exam. The only difference would be whether or not you wanted to be your own worker, or if you wanted to have the skills to manage a team of workers. However, this is being phased out in favor of a more modular approach, going from Beginner to Intermediate to Expert to Master, requiring four exams to achieve the highest level of certification.

If already certified in ITIL v2, there is a Bridge Exam to allow the applicant to transfer to the new v3 program. ITIL v2 is gradually being phased out in its professional importance, so it would bode well for any ITIL v2-certified individual to go ahead and take the Bridge Exam.

The ITIL exam will prepare the applicant to be able to use all the modern technologies available to provide service to a customer wishing for information. Basically, that means it prepares an applicant to be the middleman between customers and businesses, which is a lot more difficult than it sounds. Any time there's a problem with the connection, any time information is misunderstood or whatnot, the prospective job seeker will have the skills, once ITIL certified, to solve that problem and connect a business with customers seeking results from the business.

This is most necessary in the IT field, involving computers or software, in which an IT professional is needed to explain, troubleshoot, manage, or otherwise make run smoothly any interaction between the creators of the software and its end users. In that regard, any software or computing company is hard-pressed for the ITIL-certified job applicant.

Ryan Corey is the Director of Admissions at the Academy of Computer Education® (ACE), a professional institution that provides computer training classes and IT certification courses. His expertise on the topic comes from years of providing ITIL certification training and ITIL v3 bridge training courses to motivated students.
